Just think of how much effort it takes to make any statement on behalf of a large company. It requires several iterations through the legal department so when you are finally allowed to make the statement, it's already completely irrelevant.

Strange that some of these very companies can easily build up powerful lobby efforts for, e.g., pro-software-patent legislation, which hurts them at the same time in their use of OSS.
