The State of Open Source on Firefox's Fifth Birthday (PC Magazine)

PC Magazine looks at the growth of open source software. "This week marks the fifth anniversary of Mozilla's Firefox browser. Launched on November 9, 2004, the software now boasts an estimated 330 million users. Any company or product than can achieve that manner of popularity in such a short period of time is clearly a success, but Mozilla shouldn't get all of the credit. Most of the congratulations belong to the open source movement."

As too often John Dvorak shines in showing his crass incompetence. He shouldn't write on topics about which he is so obvioulsy ignorant. For example he does not seem to know OpenOffice, or that Apache has reached over 20% of market long ago, or that Linux is dominant in servers and supercomputers, and that Android is based on the Linux kernel, etc.

In short spare your time and dont read the article, it has no value.

Oh, but people with actual knowledge are just engaged in a 'weird love fest'. (What an appalling man.)

There is very little value in the contents of this column. Of course what's in Dvorak's columns is just plain suck-your-thumb bedtime-story no-connection-to-the-real-world please-your-audience bullshit. The man doesn't try to enlighten his audience. He tries to read his audience's mind, to reassure them in what he thinks they like to hear.

There might not be a lot of value in the contents of his column, but there is a lot value to the fact that a well known columnist has written an article on "open source successes".
