Good article and provides a good account of what's going on.
However, the MariaDB part is not accurate.

You are right that MariaDB was initially focused on adding the Maria storage engine to MySQL, but nowadays it's much more; It includes XtraDB, PBXT and soon other storage engines. It has several of the patches from the other forks and more are added continuously; This is however a slow process as all patches are rewrittento be slimmer, faster and better utilize the already existing code. We are also working with several customers to add more optimizer enhancements and other features to MariaDB.

Most of the original core developers of MySQL are already working on MariaDB. Percona and OpenQuery are also giving their support to MariaDB and are working with us on new features for it.
