Did you rule out the 1TB hard disk as the source of the problem ?
Strangely, once you replaced it, the box was faster...

The 1GB disk had worked perfectly under an older version of Ubuntu,
the machine only slowed down after the upgrade. I'll probably
try a fresh install of Karmic on that disk just to play with the
non-beta version of the distro and to prove that the disk is ok.

Make that 1TB disk, not 1GB disk. Been in this business too long ;-)
