Today Thomas Zander from Nokia announced in a blog
(http://labs.trolltech.com/blogs/2009/09/17/office-viewer-...)
that Nokia will be using KOffice as the core of the office viewer of
Maemo 5.

"The KOffice community is very happy to see this development", says
Inge Wallin, marketing coordinator of KOffice. "It shows that our long
and persistent work on compatibility and adaptibility within KOffice
has paid off and is visible to outside viewers."

Nokia has created a customized GUI based on the Maemo 5 touch screen
interface on top of the KOffice core. It has also worked on maturing
the support for MS Office documents more mature.

This makes sense. Nokia plans to move towards Qt, and they will want an office suite, so KOffice seems like the obvious starting point.

moreover, if you want an office on mobile devices, there isn't much choice
in the foss world, is there? Oo.o is probably too heavy. You could use
abiword for word docs, probably gnummeric for excel but you're still out
of luck for ppt.

I'm still hoping that one day they will support MS Office formats well. But they seem to be betting on those formats becoming irrelevant some day, and I fear that day may still be a while in coming.

As you can see from the KOffice 2.1 beta2 announcement (http://www.koffice.org/news/koffice-2-
1-beta-2-released/), there has been a lot of work recently on supporting at least .doc and .ppt. I
am fairly confident that .docx and .pptx will come as well. Excel compatibility was already quite
good. But, yeah, well, we certainly expect that the importance of binary or xml based MS file
formats will wane, given that many governments are moving to odt.
