Mozilla Firebird Raises the Browser Bar (DevX)

DevX reviews Mozilla's Firebird. "Although there are numerous popup-blocking add-ons for Internet Explorer, Mozilla has taken it one step further: popup-blocking capability is built into the browser. It's not an afterthought. If you have some sort of strange popup ad fetish or you visit sites that use popups for necessary functionality, you can turn the feature off (even for individual sites), but personally, I'm only sorry that the popup blocker doesn't also make the person responsible for the popup ad turn into a toad or something equally unpleasant. Popup blocking may not be a sufficiently persuasive reason to switch browsers, but tabbed browsing is a major advance."

OK, so Firebird is a new release. But it sounds like someone missed out on Mozilla which has had these same features for some time now.

Firebird disables popups by default. It also provides an indicator that the site wants to open a popup window. By clicking on the indicator, popups can be enabled for that site.

Blocking popups by default is a big deal. When you recommend Firebird to others you don't need to tell them how to enable popup blocking in the configuration. You just say - install Firebird and there will be no popups.

If only they could implement disabling
of the flash animations by default.
Or even managing of the flash thing per
site.

It's bug 125168 - "Plugins need ability to be disabled on a per window basis". Please vote for this bug if you care.

I just read about a 'Click Flash To View' extension over at the MozillaZine Forums. It's available from extensionroom.mozdev.org, but mozdev seems to be down right now.

Yes, I've been using Flash Click to View for a while, and you have no idea how happy I am about it! It makes browsing sites with a lot of Flash ads MUCH MUCH MUCH more bearable. Highly recommended.

Didn't Netscape have the ability to stop animating animated GIFs? You could hit the Escape key or some such. Mozilla doesn't seem to have that ability, and I miss it. Does Firebird do that?

Mozilla has an option, under "Privacy and Security/Images", that can control looping of animated images: the choices are "As many times as the image specifies", "once", or "never".

I kind of liked the option to choose dynamically. In fact, I even liked
the way there used to be a button to toggle the display of images. :)

To change this in firebird:

- type about:config in the location bar
- scroll down to image.animation_mode
- set to "none" for no animation, or "once" for a single loop
- restart your browser

This works in mozilla too, but since mozilla has a gui for this...
