I think this is a suse-specific bug, though: I cannot print either since
some time with my opensuse 4.3.0 installation, but it works fine from kubuntu's 4.3.0 (which is on another laptop).

There is no such thing as an offical supported OpenSUSE release with 4.3. Everything there is is unsupported and therefore potentionally more buggy than the normal release. If you want KDE to work on OpenSUSE use the one it had on release day. That is 4.2.
