what happened to the project funds? mention of them seems to be missing, and on the centos page there is a request that people hold off of making new contributions, which leads me to believe...

I would not read into it too much about the funds. They could have it back, or not. I don't know anything about what is going on.
But regardless, if I was a CentOS so-and-so I would not be willing to accept any new donations until CentOS had a sort of trust or not-for-profit something setup were money didn't go to somebody's personal bank account.

If you read the announcement, it already mentions that people should refrain for now from making donations. Apparently until the issue with the funds clears up.
