The Microsoft Live Services Plug-in for Moodle Debuts (Port25)

Peter Galli covers Microsoft's release of the Live Services Plug-in for Moodle. "Today, Microsoft announced the Live Services Plug-in for Moodle, a free download released under the General Public License v2 that integrates Microsoft's Live@edu services such as email, calendar, instant messaging and search directly into the Moodle experience. What's even better is that this new, integrated experience is accessible via a single sign-on, which lets teachers and students access the resources and services they need to efficiently communicate, collaborate and learn."

Hopefully there will be such plugins for google, yahoo and others, to allow freedom of choice, rather than having every moodle installation be an automatic slam dunk for the redmond monopolist.

I guess the idea is for Google et al to write their own plugins if they want.
Besides, is this code from Microsoft going to be included in Moodle by default?

If its appropriately licensed (I havent checked myself yet) then I don't see why it couldn't be. As long as moodle extends the offer to include competitive modules (as they become available) as part of the default there really isn't any controversy. The controversy will happen if and when there are multiple modules which cannot be enabled together and a choice has to be made as to which one should be the blessed default.

As far as I know, this code is not going to be included in Moodle by default, but is going to be available as a contrib module.

On the other hand, there is already a similar module for Google Apps developed a few months ago by MoodleRooms (a Moodle Partner) jointly with Google (http://moodlerooms.com/resource-center/newsroom/news__nod...)

Another Microsoft GPLv2 release -- intriguing.
