That was the war story I was referring to, as well. It's almost alone:
I've seen a single additional tale in which an IRIX kernel hacker did something similar to get a dead IRIX box back to life, and that's all. (The 'as one whose world has just come to an end' story doesn't approach the same level of brilliance, sorry.)
People who can do things like that are *rare*.
