We put in workarounds for broken hardware, even though we rightfully dislike 
it.  Similarly, in this case a minor change prevents a real problem 
experienced by our users (yes, I know we only have one public bug report).

It's bad.  Yes, let's bitch about it.  And workaround it anyway.
