Release Team's Almost-Final New Modules List for GNOME 2.4 (GnomeDesktop)

The GNOME team has compiled a list of new modules for GNOME 2.4. "This list will become the official new modules list for GNOME 2.3.x on June 2, enshrined forever in GEP 11, unless we hear loud wailing and gnashing of teeth at any of our judgements before then. That means you have just under a week to bring up any doubts or queries you have about this list." If you can't get to GnomeDesktop try the mailing list archives instead.

does anyone have a link to a mirror or a copy of this?

I can't help but notice that gnomedesktop.org appears to be lwned or /.ed.

There was a lot of vocal support for Epiphany on the mailing list, but little for Galeon. So, the consensus points to Epiphany.

Apparently there is more than one project named Epiphany. "apt-get install epiphany" installed a game, some little guy with his hair on fire. Hmm...

On a related note, if Galeon is out of the project, maybe the developers can replace some of the gnome libs that they're linking with something faster. Galeon 1.3.4 is getting to be a nice progam, if it were just a little bit speedier. It's not dog slow like Mozilla, but there's room for improvement.

The name of the Debian package is "epiphany-browser" for anyone who cares. First impression seems favorable; it's very basic.

For what it's worth, Galeon has all -- and, for the most part, only -- the features I need. Epiphany is very far from that point. Reports are that Epiphany will never have most of those features, and the developers are somehow proud of that. (The only feature that the last release of Galeon lacks is emacs edit-key bindings.)

It would be a shame to see Galeon supplanted from the project for what amount to ideological reasons unrelated to user needs.

What features does Galeon have that Epiphany lacks?

I have used Galeon for a couple years now. There was a package conflict between Galeon and Mozilla in Debian unstable a while back, so I used Mozilla for a while, until the latency in the UI started driving me nuts. I recently switched back to Galeon and noticed that the preferences are now about a third (or less) of their former size, a trend that seems to be keeping with current Gnome practice. It seems OK, but I do miss the smaller toolbar widgets.

Re: louie's comment below, I did not know that Galeon was never part of the Gnome project. What was the default browser for Gnome if it wasn't Galeon?

The GNOME project proper has never had an official web browser. Yes, we've taken our time. :)

FWIW, you can change the galeon2 (and epiphany) toolbar widget size by setting your gnome toolbar preferences in the 'gnome-ui-properties' dialog.

"Block images from www.whatever.com" is a right-click option in Galeon, not present in Epiphany. This is great for blocking ads from ad-servers like doubleclick.net, or counters (aka web trackers), etc.

There is no "prompt to allow cookie" option.

Epiphany isn't mature. If you right click on a www link you get an option to "Copy Email". (It does nothing.)

Thats with two minutes of thinking...

Icon themes have become a GNOME-wide setting, I think it's part of the theme you use (I'm in a rush so I can't check how to edit them).

Well I used Epiphany for a couple of days and went back to Galeon. I could not get used to Epiphany's way of dealing with bookmarks. It seems very awkward to me. One has to to click a toolbar button, which opens a new window, and then double-click a bookmark. Why the developers consider this better than a simple top-level bookmark menu I do not know.

Emacs edit key bindings (and for that matter the small toolbars mentioned later) are now GNOME-wide preference settings; the former in the Keyboard Shortcuts configuration menu, and the latter in Menus & Toolbars.

It's now worth a lot...

Yeah but they don't work. Or rather not like they used to. Ctrl-W even when you are in a text box closes the window instead of deleting the last word. It be came so annoying that I have switched to the Gnome ones, which seem to be little more than a copy of the default M$ ones. i.e. I now have to use Ctrl-Backspace.

Also I can't rebind keys anymore with galeon 2 -- is this a general limitation of gtk2? You used to be able to hover over the item in the menu and then press the key combination you wanted and that would be it changed.

So what used to be Ctrl-Home to go to my homepage is now Alt-Home and I am not allowed to change it.

Anyway I am sure folks are working on it.

Stu.

Just a correction: Galeon has never been an official part of the GNOME Desktop, so it's not 'out of the project', since it was never in. It's what most gnome hackers have used for a long time (three years, personally) but it's never been officially part of GNOME.
