Nvidia to Android: We're Just Not That Into You (TechNewsWorld)

TechNewsWorld summarizes a number of blog posts about Nvidia's choice of Windows CE over Android for its smartbook line. "A collective "aargh" resonated throughout the Linux blogosphere in response to Nvidia's dissing of Android in favor of Windows CE for running smartbooks. It really should come as no surprise, suggests blogger Gerhard Mack: "[Nvidia] is a company that got dragged kicking and screaming into the open source world, and they really don't want to be here.""

"[Nvidia] is a company that got dragged kicking and screaming into the open source world,"
There's been plenty of kicking and screaming, but there must not have been enough dragging yet, because they aren't in the open source world at all. They are one of the most open-source-hostile companies around.

Not the most hostile, not by a long shot. They could refuse to provide any drivers for Linux. They probably would if the OEM's like DELL didn't have driver support for Linux as a requirement to get contracts. But the most hostile? Not by a long shot. There are far more hostile hardware companies out there than nVidia.

Releasing binary-only blobs with poor support qualifies as "very hostile to open source". Only a tiny bit less hostile than not providing anything at all.

They won't even provide docs on things like the ethernet controllers in their chipsets, and that isn't even where their "secret sauce" is.

Yeah, you decide this the next day after MSFT announces that it is going to use TEGRA for their Zune HD. You go girl!
