Surely the codec patent holders should be paying the browser vendors to support their formats and the video content producers should be paying the patent holders for the rights to produce video content in those formats.
This should encourage the consumers of the video content to actually want to consume video content in a form that generates the most income for the patent holders.
I.e. the formats that are best for the consumers (higher quality, lower bandwidth cost) win out.
