More changes at Openmoko

[Announcements] Posted Jun 3, 2009 14:08 UTC (Wed) by corbet

Sean Moss-Pultz has sent out an announcement on the future of Openmoko and the Freerunner phone. It seems that Openmoko has laid off much of its remaining staff and is getting out of the phone business. As part of that transition, it will be handing over as much information to the community as possible. "I am extremely excited about the idea of an entirely community-built open phone. Especially since, when the next design is complete, it will have the benefits of everything uncovered since the Freerunner shipped last July. It will be buzz free, glamo free, and free of the recamping bug (#1024) - which I am happy to announce has been solved this past week. We promise to support these efforts with additional resources such as components to build prototypes of the new design. We will help to empower you to build the open phone of our future." Meanwhile, Openmoko is headed off to work on "an altogether different type of device." (Thanks to Timo Jyrinki).
