Posted May 28, 2009 18:38 UTC (Thu) by anton (guest, #25547) [Link] If you mean the behaviour of write(2), it's certainly the first example of the New Jersey approach in Richard Gabriel's The Rise of "Worse is Better" essay (and its variants). The problem it solves is called the PC loser-ing problem there.
