Vancouver Opens Up (Linux Journal)

Linux Journal looks into open source software use by the City of Vancouver. "There are many interesting attributes to the City of Vancouver: it is regularly rated as one of the three best cities in the world to live, it trails only LA and NYC for films produced in North America, and will host the Winter Olympic Games in 2010, among many others. There is one new attribute to add to the list, however: Vancouver is now one of the growing number of governments implementing Open Source."

Very interesting. A couple of years ago I was talking to a tech working
for the province, and they were totally Microsoft. You can almost throw a
rock from Vancouver and hit redmond (exaggeration).

Great news.

I doubt this will change much. We are very close to Redmond and we have no economic incentive to adopt open source. Also, fwiw, the provincial and federal governments are pretty much 100% MS.

Vancouver is a nice city. They even treat most of their sewage. Way better than Victoria.

Hmm, sewage treatment. Too bad it doesn't get rid of heavy metals, pharmaceuticals and a whole host of other things. Yes, I live in Victoria.

Why are we discussing sewage treatment on a Linux news site again?

Treatment for toxic computing ? Clean, crystal transparent Linux from the freshest open sources versus stinky opaque sludge from dark satanic mills - (THWACK, sorry, marketing moment there).

It's garbage collection. It'll lead mankind into a shining age, or
something like that. Or at least one that doesn't give you extra arms and
make you glow green at night.

Suddenly "generational garbage collection" sounds much more ominous.

Nice city...for now

Vancouver is a nice city.
It certainly sounds like it. Unfortunately, based on experience in other locales, I suspect point 1 (``it is regularly rated as one of the three best cities in the world to live'') will be vitiated by point 3 (``[it] will host the Winter Olympic Games in 2010'').     :-)

30+ years of Vancouverism (yes, it is a really word: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vancouverism ) will not be undone by a few weeks of the Olympics, as hard as they try.
