It's been a public "system framework" on Mac OSX for a very long time now, and it's what both Epiphany/Webkit, Safari and even Chrome use under the hood, so I wouldn't say it's untried.

I thought Chrome used V8?

V8 is comparable to SquirrelFish - the execution engine, or VM. The execution engine is just a part of
the JavaScript infrastructure provided by JSC, but I indeed do not know to which extent the Chrome guys replaced that infrastructure. But even if we consider Safari/MacOSX only, my point stands.
