Nomination are
being accepted
for the 2009 Perl White Camel awards.
"
Every year the White Camels are presented for service to the Perl community.
If you look at the previous winners, you'll notice that these are mostly unsung heroes, like previous awardee Eric Cholet, the human moderator of so many Perl mailing lists, or Jay Hannah, one of the people running pm.org (if you ever created/maintained a pm group, chances are that Jay walked you through the process)."

Surveys
Freeform Dynamics has conducted
a survey on desktop Linux usage in business.
"
Desktop Linux adoption is primarily driven by cost reduction.
When asked during a recent online survey of over a thousand IT professionals with experience of desktop Linux deployment in a business context, over 70% of respondents indicated cost reduction as the primary driver for adoption. Ease of securing the desktop and a general lowering of overheads associated with maintenance and support were cited as factors contributing to the benefit.
But deployment is currently limited, and challenges to further adoption frequently exist.
The majority of desktop Linux adopters have only rolled out to less than 20% of their total PC user base at the moment, though the opportunity for more extensive deployment is clearly identified. In order for Linux to reach its full potential in an organisation, however, it is necessary to pay particular attention to challenges in the areas of targeting, user acceptance and application compatibility."

VMware has announced the first public release of the
Racetrack Repository.
"
Racetrack is a designed to store and display the
results of automated tests. At VMware, over 2,000,000
test results have been stored in Racetrack Repository. Over 25 different
teams use the repository to report results. It has a very simple data
model, just three basic tables. ResultSet (stores information about a set
of tests (Product, Build, etc.) Result, which stores information about the
testcase itself, and ResultDetail, which stores the details of each
verification performed within the test. ResultDetails also include
screenshots and log files, make it easy for the triage engineer to determine the cause of the failure."
