Folks,

I'm /experimenting/ with recording a short 3-5 minute summary of LKML
traffic for those of us who like to listen to Podcasts. It's modeled
after e.g. the NYT Front Page Podcast, though not quite as cool.

I am hoping this of use to some people who can't read LKML every day.
Yesterday took 15-20 minutes to put together, and that's doable on a
regular basis, subject to it being of use to anyone. I figured I'm
reading LKML whether I do I summary recording or not. If it takes off,
then I'll try forming a small team to share the effort out.

Patrick, neither am I a native english speaker. (We have the same native tongue).

But I notice that Jon doesn't speak that fast and I thank him for that.
It's way more understandable than lots of other audio information sources
in english.

I have to listen to one of these pod casts. Jon is notorious for speaking very fast. But so am I. We have been asked to go head to head to see who speaks faster * I've been told that I do *

But then again, Jon has laid off the caffeine, so perhaps his speech did slow down a bit.

Thanks for the support. I've already had 500 downloads today, and it's growing. Hopefully this means there's some interest, which will keep it happening. I wanted a good reason to keep up to date with LKML ;)

I would love to hear from people as I play with the format: what tree summaries would you like at the top of the podcast (current Linus/mm/next...) and what announcements would you like included?

I'm aware that non-native English speakers might have difficulties - this isn't designed to replace LWN or other news sources, merely to digest the LKML into a commute/travel/iPhone-at-bus-stop quick 3-5 minute catchup. And if there's interest for other non-English speakers, we can hopefully get someone to translate in the course of time.

P.S. The podcast URL will remain consistent, but I've already asked a couple of larger projects for help with mirroring/hosting of the mp3s.

I, of one, really like this, however it would be nice if you didn't do things like using gregkh instead of using his full name, it sounds very odd and feels like a flow breaker.

Good point. Ok. I have also been enumerating numbers "two-point-six-point-three-zero" rather than "two-six-thirty", but might change that around.

I don't actually listen to anything :-),
so a written version would be much more useful for me;
and since you must already have a script I hope that it will be possible.

Actually, yeah, I do write it and then read it...I thought about uploading the script. It's all time I guess - when I have time there'll be an ogg stream too, and the scripts. Maybe next week :)

I think this is a great idea. Personally, the less time I have to take to read the weekly summary, the more time I have to read the meat of articles.

I like this idea very much.. Thanks Jon. I'm non-native english speaker, but I didn't have any problem listening to it. Could be very useful, but would need lot of effort for sustaining it.

We'll see. I'll do a few weeks and then review the numbers and interest levels - if I can put together a team to help produce it as a collaborative work then it becomes much less difficult. If not, it'll go weekly or "every few days", or something like that.
