It's not just the kernel people that is wasting a lot of effort on working around GCC crap, it's also the application people; actually I believe that the kernel people are better off than many application people because the kernel is high-profile enough that the GCC people are at least a little reluctant breaking it, whereas they don't give a damn about most applications. So I would love to see a decent alternative to GCC. Then we could leave the GCC people to concentrating on their main purpose: compiling the SPEC benchmarks.

...which is precisely why one of the current buzz-phrases is technical debt.
