Generic RAID layer

The bit about need for generic RAID remapping layer and how partition are of the same kind reminded me something. Isn't FreeBSD's GEOM layer something like that? http://unix.derkeiler.com/pdf/Mailing-Lists/FreeBSD/curre... and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GEOM have more information.
