The problem with what one might call the fsync() RANDOMLY_LOSE option is that it is something which must be used by everyman to avoid data loss, which if you get it wrong there is no sign unless you lose power at exactly the right time, and which nearly all programs you might clap eyes on other than Emacs have historically got wrongs/other than/including/. However, I don't agree that this application behaviour is wrong; if the application wants to jump through hoops to get a little bit of extra safety on low-quality file systems, that's ok, but if it doesn't, that's also ok. It's up to the users to chose which applications they run and on which file system.
