The author seems to imply that Debian is no longer an important distribution. That came as a shock to me. Speaking just for myself, Debian is extremely important to me. For a more objective viewpoint, the DistroWatch.com distro popularity chart shows Debian ranking 4-6, over time periods ranging up to the past year. If you include distributions based on Debian (or just include the most popular, the one that starts Ub...) then Debian is #1. Whew! For a moment there I feared that perhaps I was the last living Debian user :-)

Yes, but you don't, which is why they don't all share one distrowatch page (your apparent measure of "importance").
The author said less important, not unimportant. Get over it.

The author's exact words were "the diminished importance of the distribution [Debian]." "Less important" means roughly the same thing but sounds less sad, I mean who wants to be "diminished" right? Anyway, my point was not that DistroWatch is the best measure of "importance," but that I don't personally see the reduced importance of Debian... What evidence do you have for this view?

To put it another way: If Debian were to vanish tomorrow, what would become of Ubuntu? Of MEPIS?
(Please note that I do not mean to imply that Debian's only value is as a base for the above or other distros. Far from it, I find Debian extremely valuable in itself, and have great respect and admiration for Debian maintainers. But I also believe that Debian's importance extends beyond itself to the those other popular distros based on it.)
