The release notes detail the changes; included therein is a new default theme, a new preferences window, one-click removal of all privacy-related data, and several other new features. I'm not too impressed - the only output I can coax out of firebird is:
run-mozilla.sh: Cannot execute .
Guess I'll stick with netscape 7 for now

That gives a different error:

Hey
I could not run it in my Linux box. So I tried the windows version - just to get the look and feel. I should say that I am impressed - with the sleek gui, performace and well with the well-selected feature set.

I got it up and running on Linux, but it's picking up that crappy default Debian theme, so I'll hold off calling the UI slick for the time being. Alas, no Bitstream Vera fonts either. Performance seems a lot better than Mozilla 1.3 though.
NOTE: If you install this on a Debian system you're going to find that running /usr/bin/mozilla now starts Firebird, which probably isn't what you wanted.

Then I believe you are running KDE...
I do not know why this happens, but I have experienced the same thing (with Phoenix).
If you install Mozilla AFTER Mozilla Firebird, there should be no problems.
Be the way, right now I'm using GNOME 2.2 (the backport), and here there is no problems like the one, this thing is all about.
And to the looks... Maybe you should pick another theme or something. ;-)

Be the way...
Now I have tested it in KDE...
I have not the problem, you told about (anymore ?!!). It seems to work a lot better than Phoenix, and Mozilla is not affected by the new Mozilla Firebird ...
Have you updated your system lately? I don't understand it anymore, I thought it was KDE ... but now there is nothing wrong. (Is this to any help at all?)
Ohh! I should ad that I'm using both GNOME 2.2 and KDE (on seperate partitions) for testing... I can't deside what to use... And Ogle don't like GNOME 2.2 (I haven't found the problem, yet).

Yeah, it's Debian unstable, and I update it once a day.

This is happening with Gnome 2.2 for me. At first I tought it was something in the environment, but this does not appear to be the case. I'll have to read through the mozilla scripts I guess..

Worse yet, "mozilla -mail" opens another Firebird window if Firebird is running. That must be a bug, not a feature. The workaround is to specify the profile:
mozilla -P default -mail

Try "./run-mozilla.sh ./MozillaFirebird"
In the future you should probably learn to read shell code and submit a useful bugreport rather than indignantly whine about shallow bugs.

Note, I can read shell and in fact that is how I got firebird running. But there are these things called usability and documentation, and everyone but the djb list flame boys understand that one is entitled to expect a modicum of both by the time you get to a 0.6 release.
Firebird seems ok so far. As with Mozilla 1.4 series, it seems fast but also lacks the antialiased fonts that make 1.3 such a pleasure to use. Some widgets look extra-crappy to me in Firebird.

You're right, but only for the default builds. If you build your own, you can compile in support for xft and gtk2, for extra shininess.

Hey,
What I was getting was a segmentation fault. You do not debug segmentation faults by reading shell code, right? There are different kind of users and not everyone is expected to debug and submit a bug report for every bug they find. Please be kind enough to spare them...

Sometimes the cause of the segfault is something in the shell script. (Not necessarily this time, but can happen...admittedly if it happens that way there's a bug somewhere but changing the script can affect it is my point...) Just to stay on topic, I had no trouble starting up Mozilla Browser (codename Firebird) on my Linux box running Gentoo; unpacked the default build into its own directory and ran 'phoenix'... it came up nicely. (I will try my own build to get xft and gtk2 though...)

Copy that tuxy! I'm a little baffled by this chatter about which file to run (it's MozillaFirebird), removing .mozilla (firebird uses .phoenix, which should be removed on upgrade), and so on. Anyone who reads the short & simple instructions on the download page should be able to avoid these problems.

It seems at this time, they are not making Xft-enabled builds, so I have made my own for about the past two weeks. And for my part I am quite impressed. If you are looking for a fast, standards-compliant browser with minimal bloat, I would suggest giving it a try. (I have used Galeon almost exclusively for the last year or more, and have now completely switched over to Mozilla Firebird).
For those of you having install problems, I can only suggest you keep an eye on this project as those issues get worked out. IMHO, it is well worth it.
Kudos to the development team, and best wishes for continued progress.
Why the excitement?

Sorry everyone, I don't mean to diminish the efforts of the Mozilla team, but what is all the fuss about? Maybe FlameBird is on its way towards becoming a better browser than Mozilla 1.4, but currently it's just a stripped-down tool that doesn't seem to offer anything new. I like the preferences dialog, but there's nothing else that grabs me even remotely.
Am I missing something? I regard Mozilla, in its current form, as a splendid browser, and streets ahead of anything else. As for speed, well yes, FB is faster, but it's irrelevant because they're all still slower than IE. I hate to admit it, but I simply can't deny that IE6 still blows away everything else in terms of speed. And even more distressingly, Moz 1.4b runs much faster on Win2k than it does on my ultra-optimised Linux/Gentoo installation on the same machine. Sometimes the truth hurts, not that it's going to stop me using Linux of course!
Why the excitement?

From http://www.mozilla.org/roadmap/phoenix-advantages.html
Better performance
In my testing, Phoenix has a 30-40% startup improvement over Mozilla/Netscape and a 40-50% new window improvement over Mozilla/Netscape.
Smaller download size, disk footprint and memory usage
Phoenix is nearly half the download size of Mozilla (6MB download compared to 11MB for windows) and it continues to shrink while Mozilla gets bigger.
Phoenix is about half the size on disk as Mozilla (about 12.4MB on disk compared to 24MB for Mozilla.) As Phoenix developers continue to remove unused or unwanted code this number will continue to improve.
Phoenix also takes up about 15% less RAM than Mozilla (18MB runtime for Phoenix compared to 21MB for Moz on windows.)
Granted, there is a difference between goal and reality. But in my experience, they've made good strides so far. Maybe it's is not yet as fast as IE. But it's fast enough that I no longer spend my time worrying about the comparison
Plus, with Xft and the leaner interface, I just like the way it looks. Of course YMMV, but that's a pretty good thumbnail of why I am excited.
where are the source files?

I want to Xft-enable MozillaFirebird. Where do I get the sources? The file
is mis-labelled: it's the full mozilla-1.4b source (as I discovered by downloading and compiling all 30 megs of it!) I haven't found the real source files anywhere at that site.

It's not mislabeled. Phoenix always compiled from full Mozilla sources. As for enabling Xft and gtk2 support, it's probably done exactly the same way as in Mozilla. Search the web for "ac_add_options".

I am using mozilla CVS, which seems to work now after a few days of not working.
How to build Xft?
add this line to ~/.mozconfig:
ac_add_options --enable-xft
(see http://lxr.mozilla.org/mozilla/source/browser/README.html on general build instructions for Mozilla Firebird)
As for gtk2, that seems to require libIDL2, which is not part of Red Hat 9. Nor have I yet been able to locate sources or RPMs for libIDL2.
