I just bought a machine with an onboard hardware RAID controller. The
additional price for the battery backup was less than 2% of the machine's cost. If you can't afford that, you probably shouldn't be using RAID at all (certainly not hardware RAID: md will work anywhere but makes no bones about possible data loss if a crash happens during writing).
