Kernel release status

The current 2.6 development kernel is 2.6.29-rc8, released by Linus on March 12. It has the usual set of fixes, and the patch rate does seem to be slowing down. "In fact, it seems to be stabilizing to the point where I'm hoping that we're approaching a final 2.6.29, and this might be the last -rc. We'll have to see." The short-form changelog is in the announcement, or see the full changelog for all the details.

As of this writing, nearly 200 changesets have been merged since the 2.6.29-rc8 release. They are mostly fixes, there is also a new mascot logo, a driver for ServerEngines BladeEngine 2 adapters, and a driver for the "Dave" Ethernet controller found on the Qong Board FPGA.

The current stable 2.6 kernel is 2.6.28.8, released on March 16; the 2.6.27.20 update was released at the same time. Both contain an even longer than usual list of important fixes.
