I'm told we don't need VFAT, we can format our memory sticks UDF instead:

Yes, it turns out the DVD file format is read/write, and should be recognized by windows and macintosh just fine. (I haven't been able to personally test this yet, though.)

They are formatted as UDF by standalone DVD recorders, and Linux has long had R/W support for such disks.
