I'm told we don't need VFAT, we can format our memory sticks UDF instead:

Yes, it turns out the DVD file format is read/write, and should be recognized by windows and macintosh just fine. (I haven't been able to personally test this yet, though.)

A familiar fact to anyone who has used DVD-RAM disks. They are formatted as UDF by standalone DVD recorders, and Linux has long had R/W support for such disks.
