BTW, patent 6,175,789 (in-dash computer) is invalidated by the empeg car (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Empeg_Car). Microsoft patented the in-dash computer on September 10, 1999, and the EE Times article (linked on the Wikipedia page) shows Hugo holding a completed Mark I empeg car in May 2, 1999. Since the development had been quite public and going on for years earlier, I would say that at the very least Microsoft's patent is dead by more than four months.

the filing can happen up to two years after the invention. to qualify as prior art you would need to find something published dated prior to Sept 10 1997 for a patent filed Sept 10 1999 (which shouldn't be that hard to do)
