1. On the Front Page

The Lycoris Community Newsletter has taken a somewhat overextended leave
of absence during recent months, and as a result there is a considerable
amount of news to report. A burgeoning range of Lycoris products and
services, including the hot new Lycoris GamePak and a comprehensive
range of SupportPaks, is now available from the Lycoris Store, while a
newly re-christened Community continues to expand with the opening of
web sites dedicated to ProductivityPak and GamePak users.

A face lift for Jasmine and the Lycoris Community website

During Jasmine's leave of absence, we have taken the liberty of
redesigning the Community Newsletter, adding graphics and hyperlinks,
and breaking up sections into different pages to make it easier to
navigate and more visually pleasing for readers. Because of these
changes, the newsletter has been renamed "Jasmine: The Lycoris Community
Magazine", a title that more accurately reflects its altered layout and
appearance. If you have a comment that you'd like to make about the new
layout, be sure to see the "Contact Us" section for information about
getting in touch with the Jasmine Editor.

Coincidentally, the Lycoris Community website has also had a facelift,
and has been given a new nickname and slogan; the Lycoris Greenhouse -
Community is Power. In addition to the new theme, a number of new forums
have been added, including forums for the Iris Software Gallery and
three non-English language forums. To complement the non-English
language forums, an online translator, powered by AltaVista Babelfish,
is now available from the Home page.

As part of the face lift of the Lycoris Community website, we have added
a Giving Back Donations button for Community members to send us
financial donations via the PayPal service. If you have had a problem
successfully resolved thanks to the efforts of Community members, or if
you find the resources available on the website useful, please consider
donating an appropriate amount of money to us to ensure that we will
still be here when you need us again. By donating to the Lycoris
Community, you will be helping us to maintain our resources for your
benefit - thanks in advance for your support.

Lycoris GamePak released

After an extended period of beta and quality assurance testing, the
all-new Lycoris GamePak has been announced and is now available for
purchase from the Lycoris Store and selected resellers. Two substantial
changes were made during the beta testing period. Firstly, it was
discovered that Racer was not fully open source software. This meant
that the developers could not include the necessary changes to make
Racer compatible with Desktop/LX. Because of this, Racer was
subsequently replaced by TORCS - The Open Racing Car Simulator -
although the friendly "Racer" name has been kept for continuity. TORCS
is extremely similar to Racer, has additional functionality, and is
easier to configure, and the developers are pleased that the problems
with Racer forced them find an alternative racing simulator.

Whether you're a novice or a pro, the GamePak packs in enough excitement
to keep you playing well into the future. The GamePak includes five full
games for Desktop/LX, as well as your first month of access to
TransGaming Technologies' WineX technology FREE so you can play your
existing Windows games without additional software. Lycoris has taken
the best of the Open Source gaming world and added user-friendly
customizations and enhancements, including a Setup Wizard for the
strategy game FreeCiv and professional graphics and sounds for all of
the games. It's all topped off with a simple installation procedure to
make gaming on Desktop/LX a reality for users everywhere. The GamePak
automatically configures 3D drivers for supported video cards and
adjusts the video resolution for optimal gaming performance, making it a
snap to start playing right after the installation is complete. Plus,
thanks to TransGaming Technologies' recently announced WineX 3.0
release, Desktop/LX users can take advantage of the all new Point2Play
graphical user interface, making installing, configuring and playing
Windows games easier than ever before.

You can find out more about the GamePak by visiting the following URL:
http://www.lycoris.com/products/gamepak/

Lycoris debuts SupportPaks

In addition to the GamePak, Lycoris has debuted a range of exciting new
services to complement their existing product range. First and foremost
amongst these is the new range of Lycoris SupportPaks, offering a broad
array of support options to Desktop/LX users. Lycoris Product Support
Services now offers affordable Email, Remote Assistance and Telephone
IncidentPaks to complement the Bundled SupportPaks included with retail

corporations can take advantage of the new range of support plans

IncidentPaks for use throughout the course of a year, with guaranteed

Lycoris software wins more accolades from technology press

Lycoris software has been getting more rave reviews from the world's
technology press, and the Desktop/LX operating system has won a number
of awards during the past few months.

Desktop/LX won top honors from the prominent UK technology seller and
magazine MicroMart. In a roundup of five of the top Linux distributions,
Desktop/LX beat the rest of the field and was awarded the Editor's
Choice award with an overall rating of 8/10. The reviewer concluded:
"For anyone looking for an simple, easy to use system Lycoris Desktop/LX
is the clear winner. It is clearly developed from the ground-up to be
easy to use for anyone aged 9 to 90." You can read the entire roundup at
the following URL:
http://www.micromart.co.uk/content/features/default.asp?Category=Article&ID=1023

In addition to the MicroMart Editor's Choice award, Desktop/LX was
honored with a Highly Commended Award from Personal Computer World
Magazine. "The desktop is easy enough to use to make it a good
replacement for anyone who doesn't necessarily want to run Linux, or
even care about the operating system, but wants a stable,
Internet-ready, virus-free PC," reviewer Barry Shalliday raved in the
article.

Australian Personal Computer Magazine also reviewed Desktop/LX in its
April 2003 issue and awarded the operating system 4/5. The reviewer
concluded that "Overall, Desktop/LX is a perfectly good choice for
people trying Linux for the first time, or for experienced users looking
for a feature-rich desktop Linux." Lycoris Community member "tim1980"
was kind enough to type out the text for us, and you can therefore read
the entire review at the following URL:
http://www.lycoris.org/article.php?sid=151

Lastly, the Lycoris ProductivityPak has also been reviewed, this time by
popular UK magazine Linux Format. The reviewer awarded the
ProductivityPak 8/10 and concluded: "This is a slick, solid and well
integrated solution that should be appeal to both home and office users."

Congratulations to the Lycoris Team for garnering such acclamation from
so many sources!

3. Lycoris Partner Interview: Youssef Ismail

The sixth interviewee in our Profile series is Youssef Ismail. Youssef's
exquisite photography has been featured in the recent Beta releases of
Desktop/LX and will be including with the forthcoming Amethyst Update 3
release. Youssef kindly agreed to set aside some time to talk with
Jasmine, and you can read his interview below.

Jasmine: Please introduce yourself to us.

Youssef: Hello, my name is Youssef Ismail. I was born and raised in
Southern California in the city of Van Nuys in the San Fernando Valley.
I grew up around nature. My father was a gardener and landscaper, and we
always went fishing in our spare time. After he died, I would still go
fishing and hunting with my uncles. The outdoors became a part of me and
I would love to go out to the mountains any chance I had even if to just
sit and listen to the wind blow through the trees. After college I
decide to continue with graduate school and moved up to the San
Francisco Bay Area to attend Stanford University. It was there that I
became interested in Islam and started practicing that religion; a great
thing in my life and it really opened my eyes to a wonderful world.

Because of Islam, I started to seek out the new crescent moon each month
to mark the time when the month of Fasting would occur. People did not
believe me when I told them I was actually seeing it and so I picked up
a camera and attempted to photograph it as proof. That is how I got into
photography. After grad school and a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering I
started working, got married, and now have three kids...phew!

Jasmine: What are you passionate about, both at work and in your spare time?

Youssef: I love the activities I do outside of "work" most. I photograph
nature and operate Organic Light Photography, I am also a certified
speaker with the Islamic Speakers Bureau which I have been part of for
10 years. We deliver presentations in middle and high schools as well as
churches, hospitals, police departments and corporate settings about the
religion of Islam to correct all the misinformation about it. They can
be looked up at www.ing.org. I am also currently the president of a
charitable food bank called Rahima Foundation. "Rahima" means "Mercy" in
Arabic. They can be found at www.rahima.org. I am also the executive
director of an Islamic Seminary here in the bay area, which can be found
at www.zaytuna.org.

This all in addition to working full time at the Stanford Linear
Accelerator Center as a lead structural engineer and being a husband and
father. So I really don't have any spare time.

Jasmine: What do you set out to achieve in your photography? What are
you trying to capture?

Youssef: In my photography, I am trying to capture the essence of the
creation itself. In Islam it is taught that all of creation is in
submission to the Creator, God, and is in constant glorification of the
Creator. What I am trying to do is to elucidate that aspect of creation
so that we can recognize it and come into concert with the rest of
creation and glorify our Creator along with the rest of creation. It is
not religious, because I don't attach to it any dogma found in Islam
specifically.

However, what I do attach to it are universals that are found in all
spiritual paths, universals that are known to even non-religious people.
One theme that lately has been in my writings about my photography is
the realization that we will all die at some point, so we need to live
our lives to the fullest before that time comes and we never know when
that will be.

Jasmine: What do you think your best piece of photography has been to date?

Youssef: This is a hard question. It is a toss up between a photograph
that I titled "Another Time" and one that I titled "The Patient Endure".
Both can be seen on my website. In fact 'The Patient Endure' is one of
the photos in the wallpaper set that will be released with the next
Lycoris Desktop.

Jasmine: How about your worst? ;-)

Youssef: Wow, I have many. Usually 80% of what I shoot ends up in the
'Round File' (aka trash can) ;-) It's hard to get a good photo, let
alone great photos. I have thousands in my real files, but only about
100 or so that I think are good enough to be called 'Art'.

Jasmine: Which area of the world do you use for your pictures?

Youssef: I shoot wherever I find something that will elucidate my goals.
Mostly due to my time constraints it is the Bay Area and California. I
do however venture out into Washington, Oregon, Utah, and New Mexico.

Jasmine: What other things do you do other besides photography?

Youssef: Well I mentioned this above in talking about spare time or the
lack thereof. But I also like to write. I used to do some poetry, but
now most of my creative writing goes into my photography and essays that
I put up on my website.

Jasmine: How did you become involved with Lycoris?

Youssef: Last year I was at the Half Moon Bay Pumpkin Festival selling
my photos.
Jason Spisak came into my booth and then left. A little while later he
came back and introduced himself and asked if I would be interested in
having my images be part of a new computer OS. I thought that was cool
and so after the festival we met and discussed it. I agreed and so here
we are.

Jasmine: What do you have on top of your monitor? (We couldn't resist
some computer questions.)

Youssef: I have a stack of papers related to upcoming art shows I will
be in. Usually I don't have anything on top of the monitor.

Jasmine: Have you tried Desktop/LX? What do you think of it?

Youssef: I have not had a chance to try it, however I like Unix/Linux
and I think the open architecture is a great thing. I have a copy of the
Desktop/LX but I have not installed it due to time and we only have the
one computer that I do my photography on and I don't want to screw up
anything in my system. Not that I think Desktop/LX will screw anything
up, but I just stick to the old adage, "if it ain't broke don't fix it" :-)

We are thinking of getting another computer for the kids to do homework
on and surfing the 'net, and I think I will install Desktop/LX on it.

Jasmine: Do you use digital cameras or digitally enhance your photography?

Youssef: I shoot film, and then digitally scan my images. I do all the
traditional wet lab work now on my computer using Photoshop. I don't
digitally enhance or alter the image. I simply adjust contrast, color
balance and dodge and burn the image as needed to get it as close to the
slide as possible.

Jasmine: How can we find out more about your work? Can your photography
be purchased? (This is the part where you get a free advertisement ;-))

Youssef: You can look me up on the web at www.organiclightphoto.com.
There you will see a subset of my work. Many of the images have captions
describing what I see going on in the photo and how we can relate to it
in a spiritual way to help us connect with our Creator. The website also
has some essays and some information about how the images were taken.
The images can be purchased off the website as fine art prints, either
ready for framing or already framed. I ship anywhere in the US, and
maybe internationally if asked.

I also have many other photographic services available. You can also
check out my shows page under the About page for where you can view my
photos up close and personal at the art shows.

Jasmine: Thanks so much for your time.

Youssef: It's getting late. Its been nice 'talking'.

The identity of the next issue's interviewee is a closely guarded secret
- so closely, guarded, in fact, that not even we know who it is yet! If
you have a burning desire to ask a specific question of the next
interviewee, feel free to contact us with your suggestion. See the
Contact Us section for more information about getting in touch with the
Jasmine Editor.

Announcing the Amethyst Update 3 Beta Bug Blitz

At the beginning of March the Lycoris Community announced the Update 3
Beta Bug Blitz. Designed to streamline the bug reporting process for the
beta testing of the forthcoming Desktop/LX Amethyst Update 3 release,
the Beta Blitz has made bug reporting quicker and easier for both users
and developers. With a reasonable amount of testing, a good deal of hard
work and a pinch of luck, the Blitz will help make Update 3 the best
Lycoris release to date by a mile. You can find out more about the Blitz
by visiting the following URL:
http://www.lycoris.org/viewtopic.php?topic=6995&forum=56&0

New ProductivityPak and GamePak community websites now online

The Lycoris Community has announced dedicated websites for the users of
the Lycoris ProductivityPak and the Lycoris GamePak. Designed to be as
friendly and helpful as the main Community website, the websites are now
available at the following URLs:

ProductivityPak users: ppak.lycoris.org

Existing Lycoris Community members will need to register separately at
each of the additional websites to participate in discussion in the
sites' forums. Be sure to hurry and reserve YOUR nickname before
somebody else does.

5. New and Improved

Beta Build 75 released, Beta Build 85 on the way

Desktop/LX users who wish to be involved in the beta testing of the
upcoming Amethyst Update 3 release will be pleased to note that a new
Beta Build has been released. Build 75 corrects some of the outstanding
issues earlier builds, and upgrades some additional applications. You
can read the entire change log at the following URL:
http://www.lycoris.org/viewtopic.php?topic=8167&forum=56&0

As with all Beta releases, you install Build 75 it at your own risk.
Although the Lycoris Community may provide unofficial support for this
build, Lycoris Support Services will not provide assistance for users of
this beta software. However, if you have access to a non-critical,
non-production machine, it would be greatly appreciated if you were to
download this build and help us to find any major problems that might
mar the release of Desktop/LX Amethyst Update 3.

At the time of writing, a new Beta release, Build 85, is being tested
for public release. Build 85 features substantial enhancements over
Build 75 and will be released to the Community if there are no major
issues that will affect large numbers of users. A full change log will
be given when Build 85 is released.

8. The Last Word

Comings, Goings and Other Happenings

We would like to take this opportunity to mention a number of happenings
within the Lycoris corporate family.

Firstly, we welcome Rus ("just Rus") to the company. Rus has taken on
the challenging role of National Sales Manager, and is working hard in a
number of areas to bring Lycoris products to the consumer. A frequent
visitor to the Community website, Rus has already made his presence felt
in the short time he has been with us, and we have appreciated his hard
work and his open, humorous and friendly style.

Secondly, we farewell Dustin Knie, who was formerly responsible for
order fulfillment. Dustin has moved on to bigger and hopefully better
things, and we wish him well.

Lastly, we would like to wish Liza Cheek, wife of the Lycoris CTO, happy
birthday. Many happy returns from everyone at the Lycoris Community! We
didn't feel it was appropriate to ask how old Liza was, so we just put
one big flower candle on the cake ;-)
