Visit to a Strange Program (Linux Journal)

Linux Journal takes a walk on the silly side, with several fun programs that run on Linux. "The obvious approach is to showcase some of the marvelous tools used by talented open-source programmers to improve and enrich the Linux landscape. It is on that note that I would like to point out the following: sometimes, those talented programmers are simply playing, having a bit of fun. Sometimes, the programs they turn out are silly, bizarre and, occasionally, plain weird. Those are the people I wish to honor with today's menu."

Warning -- it's one of those stupid french chef schtick articles. I wish he'd get over that.

You mean 'freedom chef schtick', right, mon ami?

Whatever - what I really want is a version of bash or ksh that doesn't give me those boring messages. In fact, what happened to all the good old UNIX jokes of the 'make love' type?

You have source code, an editor and a compiler. Use them.

Unfortunately I also have loads of work. And - have you ever looked for the messages in bash? They are hard coded in there, so it is not necessarily a trivial project. Hmmm, maybe I should about starting a 'Funny Linux Project' on Sourceforge - a project to basically create a central message system for Linux, but also produce a set of less dull messages. It's not only bash and ksh, but all the tools.

I suppose I'd better start thinking....

What is "stupid" or where is the danger in using references
to a civilized world?

What is stupid is the inane conversation about wine and such with his imaginary friend François, and all the French expressions thrown in for no good reason.

I have absolutely nothing against the French, but this guy's writing style is a major reason I dropped my Linux Journal subscription.

At least he didn't use a swedish chef conceit. :-)

The "french chef" was mildly amusing the first time I read his articles. Now they're obnoxious and I avoid them because there isn't much of the "french chef" horse left to beat and it's more trouble than it's worth to separate the french chaff from the linux wheat.

Perhaps it's time to switch to the stylings of a gangsta, gang-banger? Fo' shizzle m'nizzle!

I must say that Marcel's "French" articles are wonderful : in fact the reason I chose to take out a Linux Journal subscription in the first place was because of "Cooking with Linux".

Seems that there is no middle ground : the articles are either loved or hated !!!

For all the "haters" out there, you have a choice of turning the page (and missing the excellent technical content).

So if Marcel is reading this : don't stop !!!
