Omit the offending subdirectory during backup. Piece of cake with rsync.

Piece of cake with rsyncBut not always with other backup methods. In fact, in a corporate environment you may not have any control over how the backup is made. And this still does not address the inherent inefficiency of using a network directory or USB stick for temporary storage. No, the cache directory really must be somewhere else than $HOME.
