Talk: Josh Berkus on MySQL and PostgreSQL

Fossbazaar has posted slides and audio (MP3) from a talk by Josh Berkus comparing MySQL and PostgreSQL. Josh, of course, is a PostgreSQL hacker, and that shows through, but it seems like a good talk regardless.

Just finished listening. It is a good talk. Regarding "Josh, of course, is a PostgreSQL hacker, and that shows through", I would agree. He is very, very careful and conservative with any criticisms of MySQL, and seems almost apologetic when pointing out PostGreSQL strengths. A third party would not have had to operate under such constraints.

Hm... Is he still employed by Sun? That would seem to be relevant. Ah, I see from his blog that he and Sun parted ways after they bought MySQL.

Actually, I gave that talk six months ago while I was still working for Sun. Not that it makes a difference; I don't believe that bashing MySQL is a good way to promote PostgreSQL. For that matter, if MySQL didn't have some really good things about it as a database, would thousands of people be using it?

Heh, you can also tell that I did the talk while I had a cold.

Thanks Josh for the wonderful presentation!

I've been a MySQL user and have recently shifted over to Postgresql. The
experience has been positive so far. Moreover I'm feeling a momentum and
pride in the pg community that is simply lacking at MySql...

I hope that replication and clustering are implemented in a default
installation of pg soon!
