Ruby and Python are the most obvious successors to Perl -- Python because
it's mature and popular, and Ruby because it's heavily inspired by Perl
(though most of the uglier Perlishness is deprecated). Personally I think
a Perl programmer looking for a new language would be more comfortable
with Ruby than with Python.
