In addition to being a really hard to read language for newly initiated I think its user base which was a fusion of C/sed/awk and shell is slowly being lost and consequently so is its beauty. I used to work with it a lot but have not bothered to look at Perl6 and for the most part have abandoned Perl 5 in favor of Groovy. Kind of funny that its taken 7 or 8 years for the Java folks to come around to doing what others have been for a while. In addition I guess there is ruby which most of my Perl compatriots have moved to and frankly, for Perl, I don't think there is a way to turn that bus around.
