Fedora's installer lets you select how to authenticate your client, including Windows mechanisms. I haven't done it, so I don't know how easy it is, but it LOOKS easy from here.

Setting up an authentication SERVER requires more steps, but that's true for Windows too.

system-config-authentication is present in RHEL4, which means that this was present in Fedora 3 (at least). And yes, setting up authentication of the client against central LDAP/Kerberos/Samba/something-else-I-forgot is dead easy -- just check one checkbox and fill the name of the server.

And yes, it is run during firstboot, i.e., just after the installation.

I believe other distributions have something similar, so not picking against them, just that the Microsoft guy really is high on crack. Not mentioning that AD is based on Kerberos, which is not exactly their invention.

Apologising for "high on crack". Apparently the issue is more complicated than that.
