Smolt might be an additional tool to help count or quantify Linux users but is not designed nor particularly good at that. (I invented smolt and now work with a couple of more gifted developers then I to continue its development).
Our goal, given enough time and lines of code, is to aid developers in being able to find broken hardware, focus on popular hardware as well as help users find information about hardware via smolts hardware errata system.
We do not currently claim to count users, nor do we claim to be able to accurately (or even inaccurately) determine which Linux distros are the most popular. I only bring it up because its an important distinction about the focus of smolt's goals. I am thrilled to be working with OpenSuSE on this. They're as dedicated to OSS as anyone I've worked with and a good group of people as well!
