The 2.6.28 merge window closes

Linus has released 2.6.28-rc1 and closed the merge window for this development cycle. Changes merged since the previous summary include IA64 Xen support, ultrawideband radio (UWB) support with wireless USB support on top of it, range timers, and some extensive changes to the block driver API. Also, this kernel has been named "Killer Bat of Doom."

I want to try the new Intel stuff badly (because I'm running on a GM45, Montevina chipset that barely works). Any news of baby eating, so far?

Where is the "Killer Bat of Doom" name in the mail from Linus ?

It's in the git commit tagging the release.

I wish the fascination with animals and in particular mammals would be a bit less. A kernel named after a flower would be nice.

Why restrict yourself to metazoans? I can see it now:

VERSION = 2
PATCHLEVEL = 6
SUBLEVEL = 44
EXTRAVERSION =
NAME = Proud Paramecium

I used to play Doom a lot but I don't remember there being any killer bats?

Well at least there was a bat [as in baseball, not Batman] in Rise of the Triad, the next best game after Doom (by tech), or before Doom (by action).

Will we ever have a kernel related boring announce?

Was the GEM stuff merged?

GEM was merged, yes. Subscribers, of course, knew that from this week's Kernel Page...(couldn't resist, sorry).

Jon, I don't think the apology is necessary: being a subscriber is a good thing. Definitely worth the money.

I think you meant to say that http://lwn.net/Articles/302754/ is last week's Part I of the summary of changes coming to the 2.6.28 kernel and that it is freely available; http://lwn.net/Articles/303609/, Part II, is subscriber-only content until November 30. There's a hint that there may be a third part coming, too.

K3n.

Who needs version numbers! It's known by the name!

But how do I compare names easily in scripts? Which name came before another or vice versa.

I guess if you are matching on Ubuntu names you can get away with using strcmp. ;-)

... except that every release since warty compares as older than it if you use strcmp()

Anybody having problems with timeouts near HDD or CD/DVD detection
please try this patch first, or do git-pull one more time.

No modesetting

Guess we get to wait until .29 for the modesetting stuff, bummer.

Did CUSE make it? Because if I have to suffer another six months of crappy OSS emulation, I'll... I'll... suffer in silence I guess.

CUSE

You get to suffer, I think. As far as I can tell, CUSE wasn't even seriously proposed for merging this time around. I've not seen much activity on that front for a while.
