The OpenStreetMap project is working hard to create a free mapping database with global scope. OSM has seen quite a bit of success, and is growing at an impressive rate. But this project is now confronting an issue which has caused a great deal of grief to many other projects - licensing - and the nature of OSM's work puts it in a unique legal situation.
