Quick correction, IIRC the Atheros AR6000 WiFI chip used in the OpenMoko FreeRunner does not yet have a chip in mainline. It also cannot have master or monitor mode added because it uses full-mac firmware that Atheros don't seem to be updating. Details here:

I woudn't blame only atheros, openmoko's track record of mainlining drivers is not very good outside wifi either. Which, I don't blame them for. Getting good battery life and stable reliable phonecall UI is more important than having everything nicely contributed to mainline.

Their track record of battery life and stable reliable phonecall UI isn't that great either.
