What about the classic and (in)famous login backdoor perpetrated by Ken Thomson? I envision security paranoidsexperts having terrible nightmares about that.

What is the point of fearing that which is effectively beyond control?

Fear is useful in motivating one (or a group) to evaluate whether the thing really is beyond one's (their) control, and may prompt imaginative solutions. Fear (not panic) helps focus the attention.

Sure, if it is determined that the thing is beyond control, fear serves no further purpose.
