Some time ago there was this MachBoot Linux Live-CD (read "Mach" as in "Supersonic Speed", not as in "Research Microkernel obsoleted 20 years ago and only kept alive by Apple and Hurd"). Their current record is 5.68s, which is pretty darn fast considering that CD-ROMs are both slow and have absolutely abysmal seek times. Interesting times …
