I wonder how that low-power JACK audio mode is coming along ...

It doesnt have jack running when it's low power. It turns off "everything" (including audio) in low power mode. For now, its just a script.

Oh, I should also point out that powertop support is included in the kernel and the powertop package is included as well, so you can check out power numbers without having to jump through hoops, just run `powertop`.

And for some hard numbers, after running `freeeee-power-lowest` there are around 10-15 wakeups/sec leaving the system in C3 ~95% of the time. The biggest remaining consumers of power are lxpanel and hald at that point (oh and any typing you do...). I have gotten it down to 3 wakeups/sec so that is possible.

To follow up, I did a test last night and got exactly 5 hours out of an Eee 900 in low power mode. This is with camera, wifi, etc all turned off.

Thanks for noting this. We haven't sent out announcements yet, just a couple mentions on fedora-devel and a few comments here at lwn. :)
The lowdown:
* 100% Free Software (anything that is non-free software that is included is considered a bug--if you see any non free software in there, point it out to us for removal. I know of no non-free software in there at present)
* Kernel 2.6.26.5-43.libre1.rt9, with realtime patches, -libre that removes non-free blobs, ath5k wifi, and a handful of other patches, mostly from upstream fedora
* Runs in realtime with jackd, so audio performance is as good as it gets. Even runs well with "heavy" applications like ardour. Suitable and used for live performance (would you want to get on stage with pulseaudio?!?!).
* All hardware supported on 701/900. All hardware except wifi supported on 901/1000.
* Lots of media applications like vlc, xine, mplayer, etc. Many have been rebuilt to include parts not included in upstream (e.g. mplayer compiled with jack, adding latest dirac/schroedinger support, fbdev out, etc).
* Various scripts to easily use webcam, including streaming a variety of ways.
* Snapshot of english wikipedia version, for offline reading
* wicd wifi
* lots of random scripts for use with eee
* Main GUI based on openbox, can be switched to compiz which actually works well.
* Includes the standard food like firefox, abiword, gimp, etc.
* Fast :)
In sum, if you're into media/music and have an Eee 900, this is ideal. :)
