Be careful. I got fed up with the Broadcom card in my Compaq laptop and ordered in an Intel mini-pci card... only to discover that the bios checks for an HP card during post and refuses to boot if it finds an Intel card instead. It's possible to hack the bios image with a binary editor to get around it but I've never had the nerve. I content myself with recommending, to anyone who will listen, not to by HP/Compaq.

This is pretty much standard fare. The notebook manufacturers claim RF regulations. I know Thinkpads have a utility to edit/disable the checks.
Wow!

There is about 4 different ways to break Thinkpad's wifi bigotry.
The one I like is the hack that flips the bit that tells the BIOS to stop checking wifi devices. If you reset the BIOS it loses the setting, so that is very irritating.
