LPC: Linux audio: it's a mess

I'd wager most of us non-sound-expert users just want a single volume control that makes sound louder or quieter, that we can always find, and that always works. No mysteriously silent apps, and no configuration save for the volume buttons physically on the computer.

For as long as I can remember, linux has over-engineered and under-delivered audio. It'd be a pleasant surprise to change that habit. But I'm not holding my breath.
