SPLASH!

Parent article: LPC: Booting Linux in five seconds

The development time that distributions spend on splash screens is much more than the Intel team spent on booting fast enough not to need one.

That one goes to my quotes file...

I, too, am mystified by this splash screen fashion: If starting up something really takes an unavoidably long time, it is far better to scribble status messages about what is really going on. It keeps the user (even a nontechnical user) better entertained than staring at some pretentious attempt at graphics design, and can be useful for troubleshooting. (Also for the nontechnical user, when he phones his friendly hacker after the the start-up freezes for some reason.)

I wonder if the new flicker free boot screen for fedora 10 will make things faster or slower. I sounds like a lot of work for something we don't want to see anyway.
