UnitedLinux: Standardizing Linux (ZDNet)

Larry Seltzer at ZDNet Tech Update gives us his take on UnitedLinux. "One day, if Red Hat and other major distributions join UnitedLinux--or even if they were to simply pledge to support the LSB--things will be different. That would be a big deal. But Red Hat hasn't signed on, and from a pure self-interest perspective I can't see why it would jeopardize its enterprise dominance by giving numerous competitors an equal opportunity for application certification."

Is being incredibly ignorant a requirement to work for ZDNet? If Larry wants to know what vendors "pledge to support the LSB," perhaps he should mosey over to www.freestandards.org and look at all the vendors who are going to support the LSB. If Larry does that, he will note that Red Hat Software is listed as a supporter.

Of course, a real journalist would investigate by looking at the LSB mailing list archives, where he'd see active participation by developers at Debian, Red Hat, Sun, and from the UnitedLinux cabal. He might also look at the LSB specification, which is trivial to implement on Red Hat because (gasp) it basically adopts Red Hat's practices (deciding whether that is a good thing or not is left as an exercise for the reader).
