KDE Congratulates CERN's Large Hadron Collider (KDE.News)

KDE.News congratulates the CERN LHC project on its first day of operation. "Today was Big Bang Day at CERN as the world's largest science experiment was turned on. Like all good technology enthusiasts the KDE developers have been keeping up with the progress of the Large Hadron Collider in Switzerland. We are pleased to see that like all world class physicists the first ever ATLAS results come from KDE. Their impressive control centre is also making excellent use of KNotes. Just as good, the world has not yet been sucked into a black hole."

This surely must qualify as one of the most pointless "news" items of the last ten years.

Without a doubt. I didn't even know that KDE had a marketing department!

Another good marketing trick is to procure independently-funded, unbiased white papers... I bet De Tocqueville Institute is looking for work, if anyone at KDE is interested. :)

Agreed. And what, exactly, is KDE's relationship with CERN and the LHC?

In other news, the World did not get swallowed whole by a black hole when the power switch was thrown, despite some naysayers' predictions.

Have you seen the live LHC web cam lately? It's been doing some weird things recently... strange flashes and stuff.

Hehe, that's funny! Thanks for sharing.

They need to build one of those in Redmond.

They haven't done a full test yet. What they were doing the other day was
diagnostics of gettng a beam to travel one direction around the loop. Next
up was doing the same for the other direction, and then they will do an
actual collision which I would believe is where all the theories of mini
black holes comes in.

Yeah, I know. I was just attempting a little facetious humor at the expense of the naysayers. ;-)

Also the energy of this beam and first collisions will be below what Tevatron achieved (450 GeV/proton). So that's already tried. Real test comes with 10 and next year 14 TeV center of mass collisions.

Regarding software, SLC4 (RHES4 recompile) is a platform for all detectors' software at CERN. (no idea what exactly they use at the accelerator department though). That said, plenty of physicists have Apple laptops around.

Not that Windows is not used though, AD and MS Exchange are used for mailboxes and account administration.

They use KDE at CERN.

Here is an unattributed screenshot from a Digg article - take with a grain of salt, but that looks like
kwin:

That screenshot has been making rounds all over the place, including BBC.
It indeed shows Kwin with (IIRC) Keramik-style. There's another similar
screenshot that shows Knotes as well.

Nice... The middle and right images on the top row look like retinal scans, IMO.
