Time for another update on the F8 and F9 updates status.

Our testing with the live update content as gone well. We identified a
couple issues with the current PackageKit and thanks to Richard Hughes
we'll have an updated PackageKit to offer as well as an updated
fedora-release package for our users. The combination of the two (or
just the fedora-release package for you non-packagekit users) will be
all that you will need in order to gain access to our newly signed and
relocated updates.

We're in the final stages of testing a few corner cases, and preparing
the official builds of fedora-release, PackageKit, gnome-packagekit, and
unique (needed as a new dep for gnome-packagekit). All existing updates
in the old update locations will be purged, and just these updates will
be put in their place, signed with our old key. Once you've updated to
these packages, the next update attempt will point you to our new
locations with our new keys and you should be able to process any
further pending updates. You'll be prompted to import the new key along
the way.

A wiki page has been created that covers some of this,
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Enabling_new_signing_key and will be
updated throughout the day as we finish the above listed tasks. A more
formal announcement along with links to the official FAQ will be
published to same lists this mail is going out to, and likely picked up
by various news sites. We expect things to wrap up by the end of today
or early tomorrow.

Once again we thank you for your continued patience and be aware that
we're nearly there!

How does all this affect new network installs?

Posted Sep 9, 2008 16:54 UTC (Tue) by markhb (guest, #1003) [Link]

I have a machine that doesn't like booting from DVD. My plan was to use the F9 boot CD to do a fresh install over the Internet from a Fedora mirror, then do a typical yum update to finish the job. Is that still going to be possible after these changes?

Updates are served from a different repository from the original packages, so you should not have any problem doing a network install.

As far as I understand, you'll need to run update twice.

By the way, if that machine can read from DVD, you can boot from CD and install from DVD.

with his kind of attitude, is there any future for fedora at all?

i am deeply saddened that fedora takes this kind of postion.

to wit:

Link for that qutie? It is very easy to take a sentence out context.
fedora-package-config-smart maintainer is Axel Thimm. Remember there are about 8000 packages and it is very hard to track them by a single individual.

You asked the wrong person. Smart is maintained in Fedora by Axel Thimm and it is NOT part of the fedora-release package. You should ask the maintainer or file a bug report. Fedora has over 10000 packages in the repository and release engineering doesn't directly handle all of them.

it's interesting to me, rahul. that it's always the users' fault(s) when it comes to fedora big wigs. (and, yes, i know you are one and work for red hat).

actually, i think it's sad. it could have been a chance for someone to actually have said thank you to a user that cared, thank you for the tip. thank you for letting us know that there's another package that will need to be dealt with quickly for the new scheme to work for everyone.

alas. it wasn't to be. and your attitude makes it worse. how sad.

Your first post indicates that you believe that smart package is part of the fedora release rpm which led to you to mail Jesse Keating. I am pointing out the developer is different and you can either contact him via email or bugzilla. If you care, go ahead and do that. Ranting here isn't really helping.

Nor is reposting apparently private email without explicit permission. Ugh.
