I don't see why you would have to get rid of the hardware.. since you are not adding anything new to the box there is no reason you could not run 2.6.x until the hardware dies its chip-death sometime in the next 10 years.

To be fair, you still want to run a supported kernel on those old machines.
Staying on 2.6 indefinitly isn't the best move security-wise.

You can use a distribution's kernel like RHEL which will get you a supported version for 7 years or so.
